Opera Genome

In 2021, Operomanija and Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre (LNOBT) have initiated the project Opera Genome aimed to promote the contemporary opera culture, which attracted creators from diverse art spheres willing to experiment. An open contest was held, which received more than 30 applications and the commission selected 5 creative ideas for implementation. Starting from June 2021, the selected projects were further developed at residences and according to individual plans, fully supported by project curating organisations. In 2022 sketches of works will be presented, whereas their premieres are scheduled to take place during 2022–2024 at LNOBT or other venues best suited for specific productions. The Opera Genome project marks a new stage in development of contemporary musical theatre in Lithuania; it expands beyond the boundaries of a single institution promoting the genre, joining forces and efforts of national opera theatre and independent production company.

Commission responsible for selection of Opera Genome ideas included theatre critic Vaidas Jauniškis, musicologist Rūta Stanevičiūtė-Kelmickienė, theatre director Gediminas Šeduikis, LNOBT’s principal conductor Ričardas Šumila, Head of LNOBT’s Artistic Activity Department Jurgita Skiotytė-Norvaišienė and leader of Operomanija Ana Ablamonova.
